A few facts on China and its language.
Chinese is part of the Sino-Tibetan language group and is the most spoken language with over 1.176 billion speakers worldwide. About one fifth of the world’s population speaks some form of Chinese as their native language. Spoken Chinese is tonal and has many dialects with at least 12 main regional groups of which Mandarin is the most widely spoken. Written Chinese is unified with 2 main systems for writing Chinese characters: traditional and simplified. Traditional Chinese is mainly used in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau and generally outside mainland China. Simplified Chinese characters were developed by the People’s Republic of China in 1954 to encourage literacy.
China has one of the world's oldest people and continuous civilizations dating back more than six millennia. It has the world's longest continuously used written language system, and is the source of many major inventions, such as paper, the compass, gunpowder, and printing. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the world’s most populous country with over 1.3 billion inhabitants. China has one of the world’s fastest growing economies. It has a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. China consumes as much as a third of the world's steel and over half of its concrete. The PRC is also the world's second largest exporter and the third largest importer in spite of its communist government.
