A few facts on Spain and its language
Spanish is a Romance language of the Indo-European group of languages derived from Latin like French and Italian. Spanish competes with English to be the most spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese. Spanish is spoken in many countries outside of Spain and is the most spoken language in the Americas with the USA having the fifth largest Hispanic population. Other languages commonly spoken in Spain include Catalan, Galician and Basque. Spain was once the head of a global empire that left us the legacy of the 400 million Spanish speakers in the world today.
Spain is the eighth largest economy in the world and is the second largest country in Europe after France. It is also a member of the European Union and NATO. The Spanish economy is one of the most dynamic within the EU. Over the last forty years, the Spanish tourism industry has grown to become the second biggest in the world, worth approximately 40 billion Euros in 2006. Spain may well be on course to overtake countries like Germany in per capita income by 2011.
Well known Spanish companies or brands are Seat (now part of VW), Air Europa, Banco Santander, El Corte Ingles, Iberia, Zara and Lladro. Famous Spaniards include Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Antoni Gaudi, Penelope Cruz, Enrique Iglesias, Jose Carreras and Rafael Nadal.
