English

English is a West-Germanic language of the Indo-European group with many words derived from Latin. English is often considered to be the most widely spoken language in the world, with over 1.5 billion speakers, which represents 20% of the world’s population, although it competes with Mandarin Chinese, followed by Hindustani and Spanish. English is the first language of the United Kingdom, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and some of the Caribbean islands and it is the dominant international language in communications, science, business, IT, entertainment, aviation, radio and diplomacy. The main reason for the spread of English beyond Great Britain was the global reach of the British Empire. As the dominant and official language of the USA, the world super power, the spread of English internationally has been greatly accelerated. English is one of six official languages of the United Nations.

The USA is the world’s largest economy in terms of nominal GDP and is still an industrial super power and is the third largest producer of oil in the world behind Russia and Saudi Arabia, as well as the largest importer, followed by China and India. It is the world’s number one producer of electrical and nuclear energy, as well as liquid natural gas, sulphur, phosphates and salt.  Two of its companies, Coca-Cola and McDonalds are the two most recognised brands in the world. The United Kingdom (UK) comprising England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is the world’s fifth largest economy in the world and was the first industrialised country. The UK is still a major power with strong economic, cultural, military and political influence. It also holds a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council along with the USA, and is a member of the G7, NATO, WTO and the Commonwealth of Nations.

There are a huge number of well-known British, Irish and USA companies or brands such as Coca-Cola, McDonalds, Microsoft, Apple Computers, Guinness, Jameson, BP, Glenfiddich, Jaguar Cars, British Gas, Disney, Exxon Mobil and many more. Famous English speakers are also too many to mention, but include William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, Bill Gates, Humphrey Bogart, Orson Welles, Frank Sinatra, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Grace Kelly, Betty Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Neil Armstrong, Benjamin Britton, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Ernest Hemingway, Margaret Thatcher, Damien Hirst, John Constable, William Turner, J.K. Rowling, Jackson Pollock, Kate Winslet and many, many more.

I just wanted to thank you all for the speedy turnaround of the last two translation jobs despite the jubilee celebrations and compliment you and your translators on the quality of the work.
You call yourselves UK Techtrans, but it would appear that you offer an all round translation service.

Thank you for all the recently translated files. I have received all the CDs, and I am now starting to print the manuals. Everything looks great!
A huge thanks to all the team, - another project completed on time and of high quality. I simply have to press 'print'.
